Traditional Bow & Wilderness Brotherhood...

Welcome to the cabin. There are some objects that hold the weight of memory better than any photograph. My friend Darren crafted this traditional bow. Though the top limb has cracked and it can no longer be drawn, it will find a place of honor on these timber walls. Holding it brings me back to our early twenties, deep in the autumn woods. We took our first bears on the exact same night, separated by just a few miles of quiet, dark forest. The scent of damp earth and the stillness of that hunt remain etched in my mind. Now, as I work on shaping my own bow from a piece of ash, Cali rests nearby, watching the slow, deliberate work of scraping wood. There is a profound peace in keeping these old traditions alive.
