How Ants Really Drink – The Mechanics of Ant Mouthparts
In other words: Inside an ant mouth!
We present here the anatomy of ant mouthparts.
What appears to be simple drinking is a coordinated system of suction, filtration, and internal transport.
In this episode, we examine how ants feed at a microscopic level and answer a basic question: how do ants take in liquid food?
Ants do not drink in the same way humans do. Instead, they combine suction and lapping simultaneously. Once ingested, the liquid is transported into the crop, a storage organ used for sharing food, while the midgut is responsible for digestion.
With controlled lighting and close-up imaging, it is possible to follow the movement of liquid through the body. The flow is driven by a pumping mechanism located in the head. During this process, food is mixed with saliva, and non-usable particles are filtered and expelled.
Using macro footage of Paraponera clavata and Camponotus substitutus, we observe the process in detail.
To make these mechanisms easier to understand, key structures and processes are highlighted through simplified visual patterns and explanatory overlays throughout the video.
