The tombs of Prophet Muhammad’s family, companions, and prominent scholars were destroyed, leaving the cemetery as a flat, unmarked site, often referred to as a "Day of Sorrow" Key Aspects of the Demolition: Target: The cemetery was leveled to destroy mausoleums and shrines over graves. Who Demolished: The demolition was carried out by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under King Ibn Saud. Reason: The destruction was motivated by a Wahhabi interpretation of Islam which forbids building monuments or shrines over graves, considering it idolatry. Impact: Prominent tombs included those of Imam Hasan (2nd Imam), Imam Ali ibn Al-Husayn (4th Imam), Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (5th Imam), Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (6th Imam), and many family members (Ahl al-Bayt).
