Description

Giant anteaters are found in the Pantanal, Brazil. They can reach a length of 182 to 217 cm (72 to 85 in) and weights of 33 to 50 kg (73 to 110 lb) for males and 27 to 47 kg (60 to 104 lb) for females. They are have an elongated snout, bushy tail, long foreclaws, and distinctively colored fur. The claws are designed for tearing apart termite mounds. Long and powerful, the claws are bent back to allow the giant anteater to walk as if it is stepping on its wrists. The giant anteater has a long, sticky tongue that allows it to collect and eat ants and termites efficiently. Their tongues are up to 45cm (18inches) long. They move their tongues in and out rapidly, as much as 3 times per second, allowing them to eat quickly. Their stomachs have hardened folds which allow the anteater to crush its food. They can't produce stomach acid but the formic acid produced by its prey help it to digest the insects. The giant anteater's claws are also used for self-defense, particularly from attacks by jaguars. Although much smaller and lighter, the anteater is capable of injuring a jaguar severely with its claws. This video shows two anteaters in the same protected area. One of them carries a very young baby on her back as she explores the grasslands, looking for termites. She will carry the baby until it is weaned. Giant anteaters have poor eyesight, but a keen sense of smell. They can smell approximately 40 times as well as humans. They use this smell to detect food and also to detect predators. Giant anteaters have lower body temperatures than most mammals. They sleep with their bushy tail curled around them for warmth and camouflage.
