Description
Yesterday at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, we witnessed something far greater than just another lap around the circuit - we saw a racer’s undying passion for the sport. Wayne Rainey, three-time 500cc World Champion and a name etched into Yamaha history, returned to the same track where he once dominated the 1991 500cc American Grand Prix. In the late 1980s and early ’90s, Rainey helped elevate American road racing on the global stage, clinching three consecutive 500cc world titles with Yamaha in 1990, 1991, and 1992, and building a fierce reputation for precision, focus, and resilience.
Rainey has continued to shape the future of the sport. First as a mentor, then as co-founder and president of MotoAmerica. But nothing could prepare the fans for the moment he rolled back onto the racetrack during the MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest at Monterey. This marks Rainey’s third return to two wheels since 1993, and his first time at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in 34 years.
Yamaha is proud to support this homecoming for one of our sport’s greatest champions.
