Description

🧠 When you sit with a child instead of trying to fix the feeling, their brain does something powerful. In moments of distress, a child’s nervous system is in survival mode. The thinking part of the brain goes offline, and logic, problem-solving, and learning simply aren’t accessible. What is accessible is connection. When an adult stays close, calm, and present, the child’s brain begins to regulate through co-regulation — borrowing the adult’s steadiness to restore balance (Siegel, 2012). This kind of presence activates safety in the nervous system. Heart rate slows, stress hormones decrease, and the child’s emotional brain no longer has to work so hard to signal danger. Over time, repeated experiences of being soothed with someone help build the neural pathways for self-regulation (Porges, 2011). Sitting with a child doesn’t mean you approve of the behavior or skip boundaries. It means you understand that regulation comes before reasoning. When a child feels safe first, their brain becomes ready to reflect, repair, and learn what to do next. You don’t have to fix the feeling. Your presence is already doing the work. 📅👇 Want more info from experts on how to be a better parent ?!
