Description
We’re learning more details tonight about the agreement to allow a crucial new bridge to open at the end of this month. The Gordie Howe International Bridge connects Windsor, Ont., and Detroit, Canada’s busiest trade corridor with the U.S. Canada agreed to finance its construction, costing more than $6 billion, and in return, the Canadian government was supposed to recoup those costs through toll revenues. But as Sean O’Shea reports, the Trump administration has other plans.
More wild weather is pummelling the Prairies with 10 tornadoes reported in Saskatchewan on Friday, tying a single-day record for that province that was set just last summer. This year has seen an extraordinarily high number of twisters right across the Prairies fuelled by intense heat. Melissa Ridgen reports.
And the danger isn’t over yet. New tornado watches have been issued for central Saskatchewan, including Saskatoon and the Waldheim area. Global News meteorologist Peter Quinlan is there assessing the damage.
The U.S. and Iran publicly traded threats today, but behind the scenes, diplomats are racing to revive the ceasefire deal that collapsed this week after the White House accused Tehran of targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Unconfirmed reports now say those strikes were a mistake and the Iranian regime is blaming hardliners for attacking without authorization. Both Iran and the U.S. appear to be holding off on new strikes, at least for the moment. Candice Cole reports on the prospects of salvaging the ceasefire.
In France, a far-right politician is making an unlikely comeback. Last year, National Rally Leader Marine Le Pen was sentenced to prison and issued a 100,000-euro fine for embezzlement. But now, an appeals court is allowing her to run for president next year under certain restrictions. As Vincent McAviney explains, her return is being closely watched by France’s allies.
