Nothing About the Amazon River Is Normal… Here's Why

The Amazon River carries one-fifth of all freshwater on Earth into the ocean — more than the next nine largest rivers combined. Beneath it, a ghost river called the Hamza flows 4,000 meters underground in the same direction, up to 400 times wider, at less than a millimeter per hour. Above it, the rainforest pumps 20 billion tons of water vapor into the sky every single day, creating invisible flying rivers that deliver rain across an entire continent. In the Peruvian jungle, one of its tributaries reaches 99°C with no volcano within 650 kilometers. Nothing about the Amazon River is normal — and most of it still can't be explained.
