Description
Amani sits in a makeshift shelter in Tawila, Sudan, holding her new baby, born as she and her young children fled the civil war that engulfed their home in Al Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur.
The young family survived on rainwater and scraps as her baby's birth neared. "I was filled with fear. How will I give birth?" says Amani. "What will happen to me? I have young kids. What if I die?" She gave birth on a mat under a tree.
Postnatal care is almost impossible to access in Sudan. In conflict hotspots, 70 percent of health facilities are no longer functioning. UNICEF has set up mobile clinics and health centers in Tawila, offering urgently needed maternal care, immunization and nutrition to support newborn survival. More help is needed.
