Ngorongoro Crater sits at roughly 7,500 feet above sea level and drops 2,000 feet to a volcanic floor that hasn't changed much in 2 to 3 million years. The crater rim forms a natural enclosure for one of the densest wildlife populations on the continent — around 25,000 large animals, including one of Africa's last stable black rhino populations, live within its 100 square miles without ever needing to leave.
