Description
Hana is the girl you never notice — literally. Living on the fuzzy edges of a glossy K-Drama world, she exists permanently out of focus: a blurred extra destined to remain background bokeh while the main characters shine in perfect clarity.
Using familiar K-drama tropes — yellow umbrellas signaling romance, conspicuous product placement, team dinners, and selective branding — Out Of Focus satirizes “main character logic” while telling an untold story from the fringe. As Hana struggles to be seen in a world divided by the lens, the film becomes both playful and poignant, asking what it really means to step into focus.
Out Of Focus is a satirical yet heartfelt meditation on “Main Character Syndrome,” identity, and the roles we chase. If you finally got the close-up you always wanted — would you actually be free?

A FILM SHORTAGE SELECTION
“Out Of Focus” is a drama short film
Directed by Kevin Bann
Director’s Statement:
We live in an era of Main Character Syndrome, yet most of us experience life as background noise. I wanted to make that feeling literal by following a character who exists permanently out of focus — a human bokeh drifting through her own story.
K-dramas felt like the perfect container: a genre defined by surface perfection, repetition, and heightened emotion. On a personal level, this film reflects years of feeling like an extra in the industry, waiting to be allowed into focus. This process gave me the freedom to realize a vision that might otherwise remain unseen.
This film is about the quiet freedom found in the blur.
