Description
An urgent customer job rolls into the workshop that needs to be turned around today and with a surprise along the way that puts the pressure on! It’s a bowl lift cylinder off a Caterpillar 637 scraper in for a rebuild, with leaking seals, damaged chrome on the rod, and a seized trunnion cap already visible before teardown even begins. The rebuild starts with getting the cylinder disassembled and removing the seized trunnion mount using pressure from a grease gun before the rod assembly can be pulled apart and inspected. Thankfully the barrel turns out to be in good condition and only requires finish honing and cleaning, but the job quickly changes direction after finding a cracked weld on the rod eye from a previous repair. With no time to repair the damaged eye, another one is pulled from the exchange fleet. But even that creates more problems after discovering it was welded on crooked and has to be cut off and then machined before it’s ready to use. A brand new rod then gets machined up complete with the taper and thread for the piston nut before the replacement eye is fitted and welded into place. While that cools down, the barrel gets honed, the other parts go through the Apollo automatic hot wash, and the new shop made parts washer gets put to work cleaning out the honing oil from inside the barrel. Once everything is cleaned and cooled down, reassembly can begin with new seals, bearings and snap rings before the completed cylinder is bolted back together and prepared for transport. Another job successfully completed in time, even, with the pressure on from start to finish.
