Description
This species of Rhinoceros Beetle (Dasygnathus trituberculatus) makes strange squelching, scraping sounds when it feels threatened. I came across this one on a rainforest path in south-east Queensland and picked it up to move it, with much squeaking and protesting from the beetle! I had some microphones handy so managed to record its strange noises before the beetle moved off into the forest. This behaviour is known in a number of other species of rhinoceros & scarab beetle which can make hissing & mechanical sounds by stridulating their abdomen against their elytra (forewings).
