Description
This is where the build starts to get serious. Part 2 of the heavy duty tailstock chuck for the Megabore lathe shifts focus from fabrication into precision machining. With the new 4 jaw chuck now delivered and exactly what we need, it’s time to get the main body fully machined. The welded assembly from Part 1 is set up in the lathe, where the backing plate and outside diameter will be machined to size. From there, the weld will be cleaned up and blended into a smooth radius using a button insert, bringing both strength and finish together. The real focus is the internal bore. This will be precision machined to suit the bearing fitment, with measurements taken using a bore gauge to make sure everything stays within tolerance. At this stage, every cut matters. Next, the internal grooves for the snap rings will be machined to retain the bearings. To finish off the lathe work, a centre hole will be drilled to locate the live centre in the tailstock. There is still more to come. The next step will be final fitment and assembly… and that’s where we find out if it all comes together the way it should.
