A FAMILY JOURNEY | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (December 28, 2025) with Sign Language Today is a special day, brothers and sisters—because we are celebrating two important feasts within the Octave of Christmas. The Feast of the Holy Family, which is observed on the first Sunday after Christmas Day, and the Feast of the Holy Innocents, commemorated every December 28. The Gospel of Saint Matthew shows the connection between these events. After the birth of our Lord Jesus, the Magi from the East looked for Him. They passed by the palace of King Herod to inquire where the newborn King of the Jews would have been born. This troubled Herod and Jerusalem. He told the Magi to look for the child in Bethlehem and to return with precise information. After finding the child Jesus, the Magi presented their gifts and no longer returned to Herod. Realizing that he had been tricked, he ordered the killing of all male children up to two years of age in the environs of Bethlehem. In a dream, the angel advised Joseph to flee to Egypt, where they stayed until the death of Herod. When they returned, they settled in Nazareth, fulfilling what the prophets had said of the Son of God. Friends, the Holy Family led a life attentive to God’s messages and prompt to act on His word. By contrast, Herod focused on his power, to the point of destroying innocent children and their families. Let us pray for the grace that God’s way might prevail over our selfish ways. Amen.
