India's First Private Gold Mine Begins Operations in Andhra Pradesh India has entered a new chapter in its mining sector with the launch of the country's first private-sector gold mine since Independence. The Swarnagiri Gold Mine, formerly known as Jonnagiri, has officially begun commercial operations in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district. The project was inaugurated by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, marking a major milestone for India's mineral industry. Developed by Geomysore Services India Pvt. Ltd., the ₹405-crore project spans nearly 598 hectares and is expected to produce around 400 kilograms of gold during 2026–27. With future expansion, annual production is expected to increase to around 900 kilograms to one tonne, making it one of the country's most significant gold mining projects. The mine is also expected to generate around 700 jobs, with a majority of employment benefiting local residents. India currently imports most of its gold requirements, and experts believe this project could help strengthen domestic production over the coming years. While its initial output is relatively small compared to India's overall gold demand, the mine is being viewed as a major step toward increasing private participation in the mining sector and reducing long-term dependence on imports. Officials say the launch of the Swarnagiri project could encourage further private investment in mineral exploration across the country, paving the way for future gold mining projects and boosting economic development in the region.
