Why do domestic horses need their coats trimmed sometimes… while wild horses don’t seem to need any trimming? Some people think it’s just for looks or even that it’s kind of cruel — but that’s not really the case. You see, Horses grow thick winter coats to stay warm, but if they’re working or exercising, all that extra hair can trap heat and can cause them to overheat and even get sick. So clipping their coats helps them cool down faster and stay healthy. But wild horses aren’t pushed to work like that — and they naturally shed their winter coats with the seasons.
