But the woman behind the character had a life story that was every bit as compelling as anything scripted for the screen. Before she became a star, she was a Louisiana tomboy who competed in local beauty pageants, moved to New York with big ambitions, and studied acting with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. She worked her way up from toothpaste modeling to The Ed Sullivan Show and eventually landed the role that would define her public identity. Along the way, she married twice, raised a son with help from her Louisiana family, co-starred with Elvis Presley in a feature film, and maintained a decades-long friendship with Buddy Ebsen. After The Beverly Hillbillies ended in 1971, Douglas reinvented herself by recording gospel albums, writing children's books, and touring the country as an inspirational speaker rooted in her Christian faith. She pursued two major lawsuits over what she believed were violations of her rights, returned to Louisiana in the mid-2000s, and spent her final years close to her family.
