But some of the most important conservation discoveries involve the world’s smaller feline species. In 2025, a camera trap in Bhutan’s Wangchuck Centennial National Park captured something remarkable: a jungle cat at nearly 12,000 feet above sea level—the first-ever record of this species in the park and near the upper limit of its known range. Why does this matter? Because small wild cats are among the least studied carnivores on Earth. Every camera trap image, track, and scat sample helps scientists better understand where these cats live, how they survive, and what threats they face. Although jungle cats are currently classified as “Least Concern,” their populations are declining in many areas due to habitat loss, wetland destruction, trapping, poisoning, and increasing human impacts. In fact, there is still no comprehensive population estimate across their range. This discovery is a powerful reminder that conservation isn’t just about saving the most famous species. It’s also about protecting the lesser-known wild cats that quietly play vital roles in their ecosystems.
