US, Taiwan strike ‘massive’ semiconductor deal

The United States and Taiwan have finalised a landmark trade agreement focused on reshoring America’s semiconductor industry and strengthening critical supply chains. The US Commerce Department says Taiwanese semiconductor and technology companies will commit at least US$250 billion in new investment into US manufacturing, marking a major shift in global chip production. Under the deal, reciprocal US tariffs on Taiwanese goods will be capped at 15%, while zero tariffs will apply to generic pharmaceuticals, key drug ingredients, aircraft components and selected unavailable natural resources. The agreement highlights the strategic importance of semiconductors amid global tech competition and deepens economic ties between Washington and Taipei.
