Description

Motorists saw their morning commute severely complicated Wednesday after a four-alarm fire in midtown Montreal forced the complete shutdown of the Jacques Cartier Bridge. The Montreal fire department requested the shutdown as it battled the blaze on de Lorimier Ave. near Logan St. According to Heritage Montreal, the building was constructed in 1910 and was home to the Barsalou Soap factory. The refusal of its owners in the 1920s to sell the land to make way for the route of the Jacques Cartier Bridge led to the span being built around the structure, literally creating a curve in the route.
