It is a very common scenario and often a very daunting one for the parents. Why is it so common? Because our girls are now experiencing their menses at much earlier ages. While the common age earlier was 11 to 12 years, now we see girls as young as 8 to 9 years getting their menses at this tender age. While their bodies are still growing, their hormone system is also still establishing. So, if a girl gets her menses once every 2 to 3 months, then one need not worry. But after the initial 3 years of onset of menses, if the same pattern continues, you need to see the gynaecologist. At the first visit, we take this opportunity to guide the parents as well as the girl to see what her lifestyle is like. Is she getting adequate vitamins, proteins, and minerals? Is she getting adequate sleep? Is she into some form of physical activity, in the form of sports or dancing? Second, we order the basic hormone tests, namely thyroid and prolactin, because sometimes they are deranged and need medications. Thirdly, we ordered a basic ultrasound to rule out any ovarian cyst masses, especially polycystic ovaries. Once this basic workup is done, we just keep a close watch on the girl. A word of caution — we advise the parents not to give their young teenagers any hormonal medication unless it is prescribed by a doctor. This is usually in conditions where the girl is suffering from heavy or prolonged menses or very painful menses. So, we need to take care of the health of our teenagers for a healthy future generation. irregular periods in teenage girl | adolescent menstrual cycle problems | early puberty in girls | 8 year old getting periods | teenage period delay causes | heavy periods in teens | painful periods in teenage girl | PCOS in adolescents | thyroid and irregular periods | prolactin hormone imbalance | when to see gynecologist for irregular periods | normal period cycle in teens | puberty changes in girls | hormone imbalance in teenage girl | ultrasound for PCOS diagnosis | menstrual health for teenagers #doctorscircle #cloudnine #cloudninehospitals #weknowmoms #periods #period #menses #teenagers #teenager
