A Good Samaritan heard desperate screams coming from their yard, a property known for frequent coyote and wild animal activity, and rushed outside to investigate. What they found was absolutely horrifying. A small kitten was lying there with her leg brutally torn apart, her foot hanging from a devastating compound fracture. The wound was already infected and filled with maggots. She was alone, terrified, and screaming in unimaginable pain. Now, our team is pouring everything we have into saving her life, but we can’t do it alone. Will you stand with us as we fight for her? We may never know exactly what happened to Mookie. What we do know is that she appears to have been viciously attacked by a larger animal, likely separated from her mother during the chaos and left behind to suffer alone. Her injuries are catastrophic. Her tiny paw and leg were ripped and shredded so severely that there is no possibility of saving the limb. By the time help found her, infection had already begun setting in. Maggots had invaded the wound. And still, despite the unbearable pain, Mookie kept crying out for help until someone finally heard her. It is impossible to imagine the fear and agony this kitten endured completely alone outside. Injuries like this are excruciating even for adult animals, yet Mookie is just a baby who should still be safely curled beside her mother, not fighting to survive a brutal attack. Emergency veterinary care began immediately after our team was contacted. Veterinarians confirmed that Mookie will need an amputation surgery to remove the destroyed limb and stop the infection from spreading further through her body. Right now, she is receiving pain medication, wound care, and stabilization as doctors work to prepare her for surgery safely. But emergency cases like this are incredibly expensive. Between emergency intake, diagnostics, medications, sedation, surgery, hospitalization, antibiotics, and aftercare, the medical costs are already rising rapidly, and Mookie’s journey is only just beginning.
