Description
Chip Taylor was born James Wesley Voight on March 21, 1940, in Yonkers, New York. He was the younger brother of actor Jon Voight and uncle of actress Angelina Jolie. Taylor died on March 23, 2026, at the age of 86 after battling cancer. Although he enjoyed success as a recording artist, he became internationally famous mainly as the songwriter behind classics such as “Wild Thing” a No. 1 international rock classic for The Troggs in 1966 and million-selling global hit “Angel of the Morning” for Merrilee Rush and Juice Newton. One of Taylor’s best-known solo recordings was “Same Ol’ Story” released in 1975. The song combined country, folk and Americana influences. In the Netherlands, the single became a major hit, reaching No. 4 in the Dutch Top 40 and spending seven weeks on the chart. It also reached No. 8 in the Nationale Hitparade, making it his only major European chart success as a solo artist. During the 1970s he also scored country chart hits with singles like “Early Sunday Morning”, “Big River” and “Me As I Am”. Taylor’s biggest albums included “This Side of the Big River” (1975), which reached No. 36 on the US Country Albums chart, “Chip Taylor’s Last Chance” (1973) and later acclaimed Americana releases such as “Red Dog Tracks” (2005). This recording is from the Dutch tv program “Martine” and broadcast on December 13, 1975.
