In January 1998, Dee and I headed to Penguin Island, Western Australia, for what felt like a crazy idea at the time... We took my Sony Handycam underwater. Years before GoPros, waterproof action cameras, or even the idea of taking expensive cameras to the beach became normal, we packed the camcorder into an underwater housing and went snorkelling to see what we could capture beneath the surface. Looking back now, it almost feels unbelievable. Today you can buy a tiny waterproof camera that fits in your pocket. Back then, taking a full-sized Handycam into the ocean felt like something only TV crews would attempt. This footage is an authentic time capsule from early 1998, showing Penguin Island and the surrounding waters exactly as we experienced them over 25 years ago.
