Description
Long before astronauts reached orbit, two explorers risked their lives beneath a giant balloon to journey higher than any humans before them.
In 1931, Swiss physicist Auguste Piccard and co-pilot Paul Kipfer launched from Augsburg, Germany, inside a pressurized aluminum gondola and became the first humans to enter the stratosphere.
Climbing more than 15 kilometers above Earth, they witnessed the darkened sky of near space and directly observed the curvature of Earth for the very first time in human history.
Their daring mission helped pave the way for high-altitude flight, modern aerospace engineering, and eventually humanity’s journey into space.
