Description
Belgian Gardens State School (BGSS) is a collaborative school environment where students, staff and the school community explore biodiversity through sustainable practices and citizen science. Students at BGSS eagerly participate in numerous sustainable practices such as, caring for native wildlife, conservation of local environments, renewable energy programs, and waste management programs.
BGSS has a well established history as a leading school in biodiversity and in May 2024 was recognised by CNN (Cable News Network) as 1 of 6 schools selected worldwide for "Call to Earth Day 2024".
In 2022, students presented at the Sustainability and Science Schools Showcase, hosted by the Office of the Chief Scientist. Their presentation focused on "Sustainable Actions for Life Below Water and Life on Land," highlighting efforts in breeding endangered animals and protecting the Great Barrier Reef.
This video shows how the school utilises its School Environment Management Plan (SEMP) and the Sustainability Cross-Curriculum Priority (CCP) to promote environmental literacy, enhance student wellbeing, engage learners through hands-on activities, and foster inclusivity by addressing both local and global challenges.
