Description

I'm a 43-year-old farmer with four amazing kids, ages 18, 15, 11, and 8. On May 18, 2024, during a routine training ride, I suddenly lost feeling on my left side and quickly found myself on the way to the nearest stroke hospital. Lying there, I felt a deep sense of peace—God was with me, giving me the courage to face what was coming. In the last five months, I’ve made incredible progress, from full paralysis to walking again and even brushing my teeth with my left hand. But I couldn’t have done this alone. I want to thank my wife, Nicole, for her boundless love and our kids for helping around the farm and at home. A special thanks to the teams at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Bendigo Rehab, who taught me to stand and walk again; they’ve been a lifeline. Recovery is no easy feat—there are no shortcuts. I keep photos and a journal to remind me how far I’ve come, and I set new goals to stay motivated. My daily exercises include stationary biking, treadmill walking, and upper body workouts. Connecting with other survivors has been invaluable, too; one nurse, who had his own stroke at my age, showed me it’s possible to heal and move forward. There’s purpose in this journey, and I’m grateful for every lesson. The road is challenging, but with faith, family, and the right support, I know the best is yet to come.
