But this is exactly what happened to two Indian students. Prakash and Urmi were pursuing their PhDs at the University of Colorado Boulder. One day, Prakash was reheating his palak paneer in the department’s oven. Suddenly, a female staff member came and said, “You cannot heat your food here because it gives off a strong smell.” Prakash protested and said, “My food is my pride.” Urmi stood by his side. But instead of taking action against the staff member, the university did the opposite. Discrimination against the two students increased. Urmi was removed from her teaching position, and both of their degrees were put on hold. Finally, they filed a case against the university. In the settlement, they received ₹1.8 crore and their degrees. But even after that, the university banned them for life.
