Description

Commissioned by the Royal Navy Admiralty, this film was produced in 1945 as a tribute to the World War II activities of the Commandos. It covers, in detail, the intensive training program in Wrexham, Achnacarry and St Ives to turn volunteer soldiers and Royal Marines into an elite fighting force. The reward for passing this rigorous combat training course: A Green Beret. The first Commando units were established early in 1940 to conduct raids against Nazi and Fascist facilities. These independent Companies initially consisted of volunteer Royal Army troops . The first Royal Marine Companies joined the force in 1942. By 1943, demand for these small, highly trained units was so high in Europe, Africa, The Middle East and Southeast Asia was so high that two full Royal Army and two Royal Marine Brigades were established. Volunteers were initially sent to specialist training centres to undergo physical fitness programs, survival training, map reading and orienteering, signalling, cliff assault, special weapons and demolitions instruction, and vehicle and amphibious operations training. Any man who failed to live up to the toughest requirements would be 'returned to unit' (RTU). #documentary #history #WW2 #USNavy #WorldWar2 #NavalWarfare #WWIINavy #WWIIBattles #ClassicDocumentaries
