Description
This is the 15th episode of our Epid Adventure on my Yamaha R1. After an unforgettable night at the cozy Ambassador Hotel Passu Valley, surrounded by the majestic Passu Cones, we woke up fully refreshed and ready for the most anticipated stretch of our adventure — the journey toward Khunjerab Pass, the world’s highest paved border (4,693 meters above sea level).
We packed our gear, prepared our motorcycles — the legendary Yamaha R1 and the rugged Power Sultan 250cc — and set out with pure excitement. But destiny had other plans…
Upon reaching the checkpoint, officials informed us that black ice had formed across the highest sections of the Karakoram Highway near Khunjerab Top. Motorcycles were strictly prohibited due to extreme risk — one slip could mean a deadly fall into the icy abyss.
Left heartbroken but still determined, we refused to turn back.
Instead, we rented a 4x4 truck, loaded our gear, and continued the final leg of our expedition the only way possible. The journey from Passu to Sost Bazaar was chilly, scenic, and filled with a quiet tension — we were getting closer to the roof of the world.
Our first stop was Sost (Sust) Bazaar, the last Pakistani town before the Chinese border. Here, we planned to have breakfast, recharge, and mentally prepare for the final ascent toward Khunjerab Top in our rented 4x4.
This episode marks the beginning of the epic final climb — a test of patience, resilience, and the unbreakable will of two riders determined to reach the end of the world’s highest border crossing, no matter what obstacles nature throws in their path.
🌍 Geo-Locations & Background / Details
**Passu Valley (Passu Village)** – Geo: 36.4516° N, 74.8917° E
Passu lies in Upper Hunza, a region home to the legendary Passu Cones, one of the most iconic mountain formations in the world. The valley is surrounded by the Batura Glacier, Passu Glacier, and the Hunza River. Historically, Passu was a resting point for travelers, traders, and explorers moving along the ancient Silk Route — the same path that evolved into the modern Karakoram Highway.
**Ambassador Hotel, Passu**
A popular stop for adventurers heading toward Khunjerab, this hotel is known for its warm hospitality, consistent electricity, hot water, and surreal views of the surrounding peaks. Located on the KKH, it has served mountaineers, trekkers, bikers, and international tourists for years.
**Karakoram Highway (KKH)**
Often called the 8th Wonder of the World, this highway connects Pakistan to China through some of the most dangerous, icy, and breathtaking landscapes on Earth. Built by Pakistan and China between the 1960s–1980s, it follows the route of the ancient Silk Road and passes through lands shaped by glacial erosion, tectonic activity, and centuries of trade.
**Sost (Sust) Bazaar** – Geo: 36.7000° N, 74.8500° E
Sost is the last town on the Pakistani side before the Khunjerab Border. It houses the Pakistan Customs & Immigration Checkpost and serves as a commercial hub for goods moving between China and Pakistan. The bazaar offers food stalls, lodging, repair shops, and supplies for travelers preparing to enter the high-altitude region toward the border.
**Khunjerab Pass (The World’s Highest Border)** – Geo: 36.8500° N, 75.4280° E
Although not reached yet in this episode, Khunjerab is critical to this chapter.
At 4,693 meters, it is the world’s highest paved international border crossing and the highest point of the Karakoram Highway. Due to freezing winds, oxygen-thin air, and frequent black ice, motorcycles are often restricted for safety during colder months.
