A new preprint from the University of Cambridge is drawing fresh attention to an under-examined side effect of the AI boom: the heat that hyperscale data centers dump into their local environment. Led by Andrea Marinoni of Cambridge’s Earth Observation group, the paper—posted to arXiv on March 21, 2026 and not yet peer-reviewed—finds that land surface temperatures rise by an average of 2°C (3.6°F) in the months after an AI data center begins operations, with extreme cases reaching 9.1°C (16.4°F) above baseline. The authors dub the phenomenon the “data heat island” effect. The team used 20 years of satellite land-surface temperature records and cross-referenced them with the coordinates of more than 8,400 AI data centers worldwide (other summaries cite 6,000+).
