Description
Two Ugandan care workers were barricaded inside their Belfast home for four terrifying hours while a masked loyalist mob petrol-bombed cars and torched neighbouring houses. This wasn’t a spontaneous protest about immigration – it was a calculated show of force by those determined to stamp their authority through fear and racism.
Sumayah Nakazibwe and Stella Ariokot, both care workers looking after local elderly people, watched flames lick the walls of houses next door as smoke poured into their property near Crumlin Road. Young masked men aged 9–20 began by burning bins and tyres before escalating to petrol bombs and stones through windows. One woman collapsed from sheer terror. Emergency services were overwhelmed across the city and advised the women to wear their care uniforms in the desperate hope the rioters might realise they were attacking people who look after their own mothers and grannies.
A local pastor had to plead with around 20 masked men brandishing bricks just to be given ten minutes to evacuate the traumatised women under fire hoses. Similar scenes unfolded in other loyalist strongholds – Shankill Road and east Belfast – where specific ethnic minority families (Romanian, Nigerian, Sudanese, Ugandan) were deliberately targeted. While a horrific stabbing by a Sudanese asylum seeker provided the spark, the selective, organised nature of the attacks on Black and minority homes reveals something darker: loyalist paramilitaries and their supporters exploiting the situation to reassert territorial control and drive out outsiders.
