The Vaishaka Mahotsavam is a 28-day festival set amidst dense forests along the banks of the powerful Bavali River, offering a truly distinctive experience in Kerala. Celebrated at the twin Kottiyoor temples—Akkare Kottiyoor and Ikkare Kottiyoor—in Kannur district, it is one of the most revered festivals in North Kerala. The Akkare Kottiyoor Temple, the main venue, opens to devotees only during this period, from the Chothi star in the Malayalam month of Edavam to the Chithira star in Midhunam (May–June). Unique in its form, this temple has no permanent structure, with the deity enshrined on a natural stone platform. In contrast, the Ikkare Kottiyoor Temple, located across the river, remains open throughout the year. Drawing over 100,000 devotees annually, the festival stands out for its deep spiritual significance, vibrant rituals, and the serene beauty of its natural surroundings, making it a remarkable cultural and devotional event in Kerala.
