These changes primarily affect online bookings for general reserved tickets via the IRCTC website or mobile app. The goal is to prioritize genuine passengers during peak demand periods, such as the initial minutes after the booking window opens. Aadhaar Authentication Mandatory for First 15 Minutes of General ReservationsWhat it means: When the booking window for any train opens (typically 60 days in advance, excluding the travel date), only users with Aadhaar-verified IRCTC accounts can book general reserved tickets (non-Tatkal) during the first 15 minutes. After this period, bookings are open to all verified users without this restriction. Example: For a train journey on 15 November 2025, the booking opens at around 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM on 16 September 2025 (depending on the train's schedule). Between the opening time and the next 15 minutes, only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book. Why?: This prevents bulk bookings by unauthorized agents or bots, ensuring fair access for individual passengers, especially during festivals like Diwali or wedding seasons. How to comply: Link your Aadhaar to your IRCTC account in advance via the IRCTC portal (under "Profile" "Aadhaar Linking"). This process involves OTP verification and is free. It's already mandatory for Tatkal bookings since July 2025. Exceptions: No change for bookings at computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at railway stations—anyone can book without Aadhaar. Authorized ticketing agents are still barred from booking during the first 10 minutes (existing rule), but the new 15-minute window applies to individual online users. Advance Booking Window Remains 60 DaysIndian Railways reduced the advance reservation period from 120 days to 60 days effective 1 November 2024 (no changes in 2025). Implication for 1 October 2025: Tickets for travel on 1 October 2025 would have opened on 2 August 2025. For future dates, calculate as: Booking date = Journey date minus 60 days (adjust for exact train schedule). Tip: Use IRCTC's official advance booking calculator or tools like the one on ticketdate.in for precise dates. Tatkal Booking Rules (Already in Effect, Reinforced)Since 1 July 2025, Aadhaar authentication is mandatory for all Tatkal bookings via IRCTC (online only—no agent bookings allowed). From 15 July 2025, Aadhaar-based OTP is required for Tatkal confirmations.
