Description
The Washington County District Attorney’s Office said Sheriff Nate Brooksby submitted his resignation hours after meeting with the commissioners’ office to address “a few different allegations.”
Brooksby ended his career with more than 30 years in law enforcement.
“The commissioners received complaints about some of the operations of the Sheriff’s Office, and they did discuss those with Sheriff Brooksby,” said Courtney Sinagra with the DA’s Office. “Sheriff Brooksby denied any wrongdoing. He disagreed with the concerns that were raised and ultimately decided to retire after 30 years in law enforcement.”
Sinagra said no charges were expected related to the complaints.
“The complainants asked that the matter not be pursued further, so the commissioners were respecting that,” she said. “At the Washington County Attorney’s Office, we were focused on overseeing the process of transition and selecting an interim sheriff and making sure that the county continued to run smoothly and our citizens were served.”
The DA’s Office said Sheriff Brooksby “didn’t necessarily receive a severance for his departure, but he did receive his already approved salary.”
Sinagra said the office would continue to follow internal policies and procedures for proper practices in the Sheriff’s Department. She added that the department had “shown leadership in taking complaints seriously, so they would continue to listen to anything that was brought to their attention.”
“I appreciate Sheriff Brooksby’s leadership and wish him all the best with his hard-earned retirement. He will be greatly missed.” Acting-Sheriff Golding stated. “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve during this transitory time, and my priority is to continue to provide the highest level of service to our community.”
Undersheriff Barry Golding will serve as acting sheriff while the Washington County Commission and the Washington County Republican Party appoint an interim sheriff. The Republican Party will have 30 days after receiving notice from the commission to submit the name of a candidate. The commission must then appoint that candidate within a week.
“There are qualifications that the sheriff must have,” Sinagra said. “They must be POST-certified, for example. But if the Republican Party were to select someone who does not currently have that qualification, that person would have a period of time to obtain it.”
The individual selected will hold office until a successor is elected and installed in the November election.
“In speaking with acting Sheriff Golding, his priority is to keep business running as usual, stay focused on serving our community and let the process play out as we select an interim Washington County sheriff,” Sinagra said.
