I Saved Money By Replacing My Old Trailer’s Axle and Suspension

That’s the last time I let someone borrow my trailer… Actually, I’ve owned this trailer for over 25 years, and it needs some work- I’m going to replace the entire suspension and the axle. All of these parts cost me around 350 dollars, which is way cheaper than a new trailer. Now at this point, I made a major mistake when I was putting it together. Does anyone know what I messed up? These little parts right here are leaf spring shackles- they let the leaf springs flex without binding up or stressing the frame. This axle is heavy, so I got help sliding it into place. The bolts that come with the leaf springs have serrations on the one end so they will lock into the hanger. This is designed so the bushing pivots and not the bolt. The kit comes with locknuts for the suspension bolts, so they won’t come loose. At this point, once I had it all together, I realized my mistake. The axle is supposed to be on top of the leaf springs. I literally had to take everything back apart, flip the leaf springs upside down, turn the axle over, and reinstall it.
