Australia's longest river wasn't always there. Millions of years ago, the ancestral Murray River likely flowed south through western Victoria before tectonic uplift blocked its path to the ocean. The result was the formation of Lake Bungunnia, a gigantic inland lake that covered tens of thousands of square kilometres across southeastern Australia.
