India’s airports look overcrowded, yet many of them are completely silent and unused. On one hand, metro airports feel like bus stands with heavy rush, flight delays, and rising ticket prices due to limited airline competition. On the other hand, official data shows a shocking reality. India has 143 active airports, but nearly 20 percent of them saw fewer than two flights per day in the last eight months. Some airports like Tezpur in Assam, Kanpur Civil in Uttar Pradesh, Pakyong in Sikkim, and Shravasti in Uttar Pradesh saw zero flights during this period. In November 2025 alone, nine airports had no flights for an entire month. This raises serious questions about India’s aviation planning and regional connectivity. While the government has approved new airlines under pressure, demand remains concentrated in a few big cities.
