He was the one who presided over the timelines of all things living. He was also one of the four pillars that held the sky aloft. Iapetus was also involved in the dethroning of his father, Uranus. Gaia was hurt and angered when her children were imprisoned by their own father in Tartarus. She had devised a plan to end Uranus’ tyranny, but none were willing to carry it forward for fear of earning Uranus’ wrath. None, but Cronus, the youngest of his sons. Gaia forged a sickle and handed it to Cronus. When Uranus came down to lay with Gaia, Cronus called unto his brothers to hold him down. Koios held down Uranus’s head, Krios his feet, Hyperion his left arm and finally Iapetus his right. Armed with the sickle his mother gave him, Cronus then took over Uranus’s throne and deemed himself the new King. Iapetus sons Prometheus and Epimetheus are thought to be the creators of mankind and animals. It is believed that after the Titanomachy, the ten year long battle, Zeus had entrusted the brothers to populate the world with humans and animals. Prometheus, the intelligent of the two decided to create humans while the guileless Epimetheus set down to make animals. But Zeus soon grew angry at mankind and to punish them, he sent a beautiful woman named Pandora to earth and had Epimetheus marry her. She was also given a box by Zeus with instruction to never open it. But curiosity got the best of her and Epimetheus and Pandora opened the box. The box contained all sorts of evil and diseases which were now released into the world. To this day, it is believed that humans all over the world have different kinds of suffering only because Pandora released the contents of her box though she was asked not to.
