Wahoo, Dogtooth & Mahi Madness – Spearfishing Paradise!

Epic spearfishing moments from a week guiding and diving with the Salty Pilgrims Freediving crew over on Eua Island 🇹🇴 The Blue Water Retreat is proud to host the first ever dedicated International Blue Water Open Fishing Competition to be held in the Kingdom of Tonga. This event is planned from November 1-8, 2025 from the island of Eua. It is being promoted as a “friendly, safe and sustainable blue water fishing competition” with fisherman (spear and line fisherman) working in pairs and a restricted sign on of a maximum of 24 competitors. The waters off Eua are typically very clear and offer world class diving. Likely species to be encountered include wahoo, mahi mahi, dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna, blue, black and striped marlin along with XL sailfish, giant trevally, jobfish and a host of smaller pelagic species. Early November still has humpback whales around and opportunities exist to swim with humpbacks as well. There are a series of productive offshore FADS as well as various The week will be run under a competition format, but it will be very friendly and chill! You’ll still have the complete freedom to target and shoot whatever you want and also be as competitive as you would like to, there’s no pressure at all. If you decide to come I’ll be your guide the whole time, there’s currently only 2 spots left.
