Mossad reportedly planned to install Ahmadinejad as Iran's new leader

According to reports from The New York Times and Haaretz, Israel's Mossad drew up an elaborate plan to overthrow Iran's leadership early in the war. The plot allegedly began with the killing of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, followed by aerial support for a Kurdish offensive from Iraq into Iran, with the goal of installing hardline former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the country's new leader. Despite his longstanding record of Holocaust denial, anti-Israel rhetoric, and calling for Israel to be "wiped off the map," Ahmadinejad has since fallen out with Iran's establishment and refashioned himself as a populist, anti-establishment figure.
