Kanlaon superheated plume can be precursor to explosive eruption - Phivolcs | ABS-CBN News

The superheated plume or gas emitted by Kanlaon Volcano can be considered as a precursor to an explosive eruption. Mari-Andylene Quintia, resident volcanologist at the Kanlaon Observatory based in La Carlota, said they have monitored the same emissions prior to the December 2024 and May and October 2025 explosive eruptions of Kanlaon. Superheated plume activity at the crater of Kanlaon was recorded by the infra-red channels of the Observation Station of the volcano at the Upper Pantao, Canlaon City between 6:41 pm and 7:13 pm of January 28. Heat sensitive cameras have frequently recorded nighttime emissions of superheated gas from the volcano. Quintia said superheated plume or gas emissions could also occur during daytime, however these cannot be captured by the cameras. Emissions like these cannot be seen by naked eye, she said. Superheated plumes or gas indicates the magmatic activity of the volcano. Swarms of volcanic quakes were recorddr earlier this January. These were also considered as a precursor to an explosive eruption. Quintia emphasized the need to maintain the 4km permanent danger zone to ensure safety. Kanlaon remains at alert level 2 or state of unrest.
