The Lactational Amenorrhea Method is a natural short-term contraceptive method. There are three criteria for this Lactational Amenorrhea Method. First, it is applicable up to 6 months following delivery. Second, there should be exclusive breastfeeding—no top feeds, no feeding the baby with water, and no pacifiers. There should be no long gaps between feeds. The gap should not be more than 4 hours during the day and 6 hours at night. The third criterion is that periods should not have come back. All three criteria should be met; only then is the Lactational Amenorrhea Method effective. It is effective to the extent of 98%. Why does this act as a form of contraception? During breastfeeding, a hormone called prolactin is released, which suppresses ovulation. That is the reason conception does not occur. However, beyond 6 months, or if top feeds have been started, or if periods have returned, one cannot rely on the Lactational Amenorrhea Method. In such cases, effective contraception must be used.
