The true age of this banyan tree was determined by scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), located in the state capital, Lucknow. In 2022, at the invitation of the Bihar State Forest Department, scientist Dr. Trina Bose and research scholar Avneesh Mishra arrived in Munger. Here, a scientific study was initiated on this massive tree, which is situated within the premises of the Indian Tobacco Company (ITC). The greatest challenge facing the scientists was determining the tree's actual age. Typically, the age of trees is ascertained by counting the annual rings formed within their trunks. However, the structural composition of a banyan tree is unique; these rings do not form distinctly within it, making it extremely difficult to estimate its age. Consequently, the scientists turned to a modern technique: radiocarbon dating. Through this method, samples from the tree's older trunks and dried roots were analyzed. A crucial consideration during this process was ensuring that the main trunk remained completely unharmed; therefore, the scientists collected the samples with the utmost care and precision. The results that emerged following the research left everyone astonished: the banyan tree was found to be over 700 years old. Scientists claim that, currently, there is no other living banyan tree anywhere in the world older than this one. This discovery constitutes a significant biological and historical achievement—not only for India but for the entire world. The most remarkable feature of this banyan tree is its structure. Over time, many of its aerial roots descended to the ground and transformed into new trunks. Today, the tree does not resemble a single individual tree, but rather a small forest.
