Description
Spinosaurus is an animal that never ceases to astound with all of the new information we’ve learned over the years of studying them, with recent papers revealing that they were both shorter legged and thicker tailed than we thought, something which of course has huge implications as to their ecology and behaviour. Were they divers, waders, pursuiters or ambushers, and just where did their sail factor into any of this, or at all! Potentially their habits were a combination of all of these previously mentioned niches to varying degrees, but in any case, it goes to show just how ferocious the debate is around them.
Now, new news now refocuses the debate to uncharted territory, as there is another spinosaurus in town. All of the discussions and debates that have occurred surrounding Spinosaurus have occurred around the type species, spinosaurus aegypticus, long making the genus of Spinosaurus a monotypic one, but that has now changed. A potentially new species of Spinosaurus with a huge, scimitar-shaped crest has been hinted at, teased and leaked from those in the field since around 2022, when images of them circulated around the internet from both the lab at which the specimens were being held, as well as at paleontological conferences, like the 2024 Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, where once some photos were taken, many in the community became aware of them, even though this was of course breaking embargo and screwing with the scientific process.
In any case, the work on their initial description has finally concluded, and after years of speculation as to what this strange looking spinosaurus specimen was, we finally can put a name to the skull. This is Spinosaurus mirabilis. I hope you enjoy!
