RHODES GREECE | A tour of Rhodes Old Town at night! Rhodes Old Town is one of the most remarkably well-preserved medieval settlements in Europe, earning it a place as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Encircled by a four kilometer long double wall and a deep dry moat, the city served as a formidable stronghold for the Knights of Saint John from 1309 until 1522. Walking through its massive gates today, you are immediately met by a dense architectural layers where Gothic fortresses stand alongside Byzantine churches and Ottoman mosques, reflecting the island's strategic history at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. The high town, or Collachium, is dominated by the imposing Palace of the Grand Master, a fortress within a fortress that once functioned as the administrative center and residence of the Knights. Leading away from the palace is the Street of the Knights, a perfectly straight, cobblestoned avenue lined with the former inns of the different national orders. These buildings still bear the original stone coats of arms and intricate carvings of the noblemen who once resided there, creating a silent, stone corridor that feels remarkably untouched by the modern world. In contrast to the formal grandeur of the knights' quarters, the lower town is a bustling labyrinth of narrow alleys and vibrant squares like Hippocrates Square. Here, the city remains very much alive, with roughly 6,000 residents living and working within the ancient walls. Traditional Greek houses with flower draped balconies share space with the pink domes of the Suleymaniye Mosque and the 15th century Hospital of the Knights, which now houses the Archaeological Museum. This blend of living community and monumental history ensures that the Old Town is not merely a static museum, but a thriving part of Rhodian life.
