Description
We are back on patrol at Pelican Point today, and the situation on the sand is deeply frustrating. We are tracking multiple seals severely entangled in commercial fishing line, and they need our help immediately.
Looking at the sheer volume of ghost gear we pull off these animals, we sometimes have to wonder: do these commercial fishing vessels bring any of their old lines back to land at all? With a complete lack of real-world enforcement and zero consequences for ocean littering, it feels like a massive part of the industry has simply stopped caring. They discard their old nets and monofilament lines right where they sit, with total disregard for the marine life below.
Every single day, the OCN team feels like we are fighting windmills against an endless tide of plastic. But we refuse to stop looking.
A massive shoutout to our guest rescuer visiting from Vancouver! She showed us exactly what true professionalism looks like today. After taking a hard fall straight into the freezing ocean waves, she simply laughed it off, got right back up on the sand, and kept fighting to set these seals free.
