The earthquake was felt in Davao City shortly before 7.40am local time (12.40am in the UK) on Monday, June 8, 2026. Chilling footage captured the moment the earthquake struck Sarangani in the Philippines, showing buildings crumbling as the tectonic plates shifted with massive force. Pictures show multiple buildings reduced to rubble as authorities said the deaths were caused by falling debris, a landslide, and the collapse of damaged structures. A tsunami alert was also issued for the country and across a large part of South East Asia and part of the United States after the 7.8 magnitude tremor struck. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre now says that threat has "largely passed".
