The Gregoria M. Rivera Memorial Library is a historic library located in the Spanish colonial city of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. It is housed in a building that was originally constructed to be the Provincial Jail. The library is recognized with a historical marker and is part of the city's collection of historic landmarks, with Vigan being named one of the New7Wonders Cities in 2015.
Location: The building is located on Calle Burgos in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, near the Padre Burgos Museum. Vigan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its preserved Spanish colonial architecture.
Historical Significance: The structure has a long and varied history.
It was originally constructed as the municipal jail in 1657 and later became the Ilocos Sur provincial jail in 1818.
President Elpidio Quirino, the sixth President of the Philippines, was born in the building on November 16, 1890, while his father was serving as the jail warden.
A section of the jail complex was converted into a library on October 27, 1948, and named in honor of President Quirino's mother, Gregoria Rivera Mendoza de Quirino.
The building ceased functioning as a jail on June 30, 2014, when prisoners were moved to a new penitentiary.
Current Status: The old jail building was donated to the National Museum of the Philippines and was inaugurated as a museum in January 2015. It now houses various exhibits, including those about President Quirino's life and the Basi Revolt, while also continuing to serve as the main public library for the city.
